The short answer

Engagement rate is a post’s interactions (likes, comments, shares and saves) divided by followers, or by views or reach, times 100. By followers, the 2026 median per post is 2.01% on TikTok, 0.30% on Instagram, 0.21% on YouTube, 0.06% on Facebook and 0.03% on X (Rival IQ). Compare like with like: a rate by views is always higher than one by followers.

Compare with a published average

Runs in your browser; nothing is stored. Benchmarks are each report’s own figures, both per follower; your rate is compared on the same base.

Read it fairly

  • Same base, same count

Socialinsider counts only likes and comments on Instagram, but likes, comments, shares and saves on TikTok. Check what a benchmark counts before you compare.

  • Median or average

Rival IQ publishes medians, Socialinsider averages; averages run higher because a few viral posts pull them up. The two reports differ by 1.3 to 4 times.

  • Big accounts score lower

Rates by followers fall as accounts grow, so compare with accounts your size, and with your own past posts above all.

  • Sends and shares weigh most for reach

Instagram says sends matter slightly more for reaching people who do not follow you, so a post with fewer likes but more sends can travel further.

The benchmarks

Figures as published by each report, read on 7 October 2026. Both benchmark sets divide by followers, so neither is comparable with a rate by reach or views.

The formulas

  • By followers

Interactions ÷ followers × 100. What most benchmark reports use, so it is the one to compare with them.

  • By reach

Interactions ÷ people reached × 100. Hootsuite calls it the most common formula; it rewards posts that land with whoever saw them.

  • By views or impressions

Interactions ÷ views (or impressions) × 100. Best for video, and for posts shown mostly to non-followers.

Short answers to what people ask next.

Add a post’s likes, comments, shares and saves, divide by followers (or by views or reach), and multiply by 100. 180 interactions on an account with 5,000 followers is 3.6%.

Above the median for accounts like yours. By followers, the 2026 median per Instagram post is 0.30% (Rival IQ) and the average 0.48% (Socialinsider, likes and comments only).

TikTok runs highest: a 2.01% median per post by followers (Rival IQ, 2026) and a 2.60% average (Socialinsider). Above that, your posts are doing better than most.

Use followers to compare with benchmarks, which mostly divide by followers. Use views or reach to judge a single video, especially one shown mostly to people who do not follow you.

Rates by followers fall as accounts grow because not every follower sees every post. Track your rate by views alongside it.
