The short answer
YouTube ranks Shorts on performance and on each viewer’s tastes: The share of viewers who chose to watch rather than swipe away, average view duration and percentage viewed, plus likes and surveys. It favours no format and needs no posting quota. So win the first second, keep people to the end, post originals, and never delete and re-upload a Short that flopped.

Get more Shorts views, step by step
- 01
Win the first second
Start on the most interesting frame or line. In the Shorts feed, being swiped away is the equivalent of not being clicked.
- 02
Cut to the length the idea needs
Average percentage viewed is a ranking signal, so cut every second that does not move the idea forward.
- 03
Make it worth a like
Likes and post-watch surveys tell YouTube whether people enjoyed it, not just whether they stayed.
- 04
Post originals
Reuploads of other people’s clips earn nothing, and mass-produced near-copies break the spam policy. Reuse a format, not footage.
- 05
Add a few hashtags, a clear title
Up to three hashtags show by the title; more than 60 and YouTube ignores them all. Titles are up to 100 characters.
- 06
Read “viewed vs swiped away”
In YouTube Analytics, compare it across your Shorts and make more of the openings that held people.
What YouTube actually says
Viewed vs swiped away
With no thumbnail in the feed, the first seconds work like a click: YouTube ranks on the “% of viewers who chose to view”.
Watch time, then enjoyment
Average view duration and average percentage viewed, then likes and post-watch surveys to see whether viewers enjoyed it.
No format bias, no quota
The system “doesn’t favor any particular format”, and “there is no minimum posting cadence required”.
Up to 3 minutes
Since 15 October 2024, square or vertical videos up to three minutes count as Shorts. Over one minute with a Content ID claim, a Short is blocked.
Shorts do not hurt long videos
“Shorts performance doesn’t negatively impact long form Video recommendations.”
Views count from the first frame
Since 24 August 2026 every format counts views from the first frame; “engaged views” are the ones that kept watching. Recommendations did not change.
